Odyssey Charter School was one of the first state-approved charter schools in Georgia, obtaining approval from the Georgia Board of Education in 2001. Thanks to the hard work, dedication and perseverance of the original members of the Odyssey family, what started as an idea in 1998 became a reality on August 12, 2004, when Odyssey School opened its doors for the first day of school.
A public school of choice, we began in a 10,000 square foot space in the White Oak Center with 14 staff members and approximately 120 students in grades K-5. By 2008, we had grown to about 180 students in K-5 and the Odyssey Board voted to expand the school to 8th grade by adding one grade each year.
Also in 2008, the school purchased the former home of Newnan Classical School, a 26,000 square foot facility in the Shenandoah Industrial Park. Students in grades 4-6 were moved to the new school building while students in K-3 remained at the original location on Highway 34. After renovations to the new building were complete, the entire school relocated to the new school building in time for the 2009-2010 school year.
At the end of the 2012-2013 school year, the first group of students that had been at Odyssey since Kindergarten graduated from 8th grade and moved on to high school. By the 2014-2015 school year, Odyssey had grown to about 400 students in grades K-8.
For a number of years, Odyssey was in a partnership with K12, Inc. to operate the Georgia Cyber Academy (GCA). GCA serves over 13,000 students from all over the state. This was a mutually beneficial partnership, but often created some confusion for current and prospective families, not to mention the Georgia Department of Education! On July 1, 2014, GCA became its own charter school and is no longer under the Odyssey umbrella. Although we are no longer in partnership with GCA, Odyssey did retain the Title 1 designation and Title 1 funding.
In October 2014, Odyssey received the official notification that we had earned accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancEd. Accreditation is seen as a “stamp of approval” by members of the general public and an outward indication that we have a quality school. To earn accreditation, schools must meet SACS CASI’s high standards, be evaluated by a team of professionals from outside the school and implement a continuous process of school improvement.
Our school logo was updated in May 2015 using artwork created by the 2014-2015 8th grade class. The large canvas was an art project where each student drew and painted a square. The students gifted the painting to the school and it hangs proudly in our main hallway. We treasure it and think it represents our school so well, we decided to make it our logo!
Mr. Andy Geeter was part of the original group of parents that founded the school and he led Odyssey School as the School Director/Principal for the first eleven years of our existence. Under his direction, we added three grade levels, grew from 119 students to over 400, moved from one building to another, became accredited and so much more! Through it all, Mr. Geeter fostered a spirit of family and community within the school that will forever be his legacy. Once an Odyssey Tiger, always an Odyssey Tiger!
On July 1, 2015, Mr. Scot Hooper joined the Odyssey family as our new Principal. Learn more about him on our Faculty page!
