In 2011, Odyssey’s Middle School wanted to raise funds to help pay for field trips and other materials for middle school classrooms. They teamed up with Special Olympics of Coweta County and together they decided to build a Haunted House in an empty storefront at Ashley Park Mall.
The Haunted House was set up by parent and student volunteers. It operated on the two weekends leading up to Halloween and was also open on Halloween night. Local High school students who needed to earn volunteer hours for BETA club, JROTC or Drama Club worked in the Haunted House as part of the scare team. In this way, the Haunted House benefitted Odyssey, Special Olympics and dozens of local high school students.
Over the years, the Haunted House raised several thousand dollars that was split between Special Olympics and Odyssey Middle School. Our portion was used to purchase graduation t-shirts for all 8th grade students and 2 class sets of middle school literature books. There were also enough funds to pay for the buses for a field trip to the Georgia Aquarium and for a good portion of the 8th grade graduation ceremonies.
Overall, this was a fun (and scary!) way for our Middle School to raise funds while also helping support Special Olympics and local high school students.
