We believe that art contributes to, and enhances, all other aspects of a child’s education. The mission of the Odyssey Art program is to foster confidence and expand creative thinking and self-expression through the visual arts. Because we are a public school, the Odyssey Art curriculum is aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards for Visual Art. More information about these standards can be found on the Georgia Department of Education website.
K-5th grade
Elementary students have art once a week for 45 minutes. At this age, the goal is to build a solid foundation in the elements of art, such as line, shape, form, texture, and space. While building basic art skills, students will learn color theory, will become familiar with art terminology, and will learn how to communicate visually. Art history is integrated into classes so that students will become familiar with the works of various artists. In addition, students will be exposed to different styles of art and different types of art media. They are then given the opportunity to create artwork in those styles using paint, modeling clay, colored pencils, soft pastels, oil pastels, mixed media, paper mâché, and more. And finally, students will also learn how to intelligently discuss their own artwork and the artwork of others.
6th-8th grade
Middle school students have art every single day for an entire semester as part of their Connection classes. At this grade level, we build on the basic art skills that were learned throughout elementary school and expand on areas such as shading, perspective, negative space, and color theory. Art History is still woven into lessons so that students have the opportunity to see and try different types of art. Every day, middle school students will use a sketchbook to practice their observational drawing skills and to maintain their visual thoughts. It’s during this time that most students will begin to experiment with and create their own individual style.
